Highlighting the Child Language Laboratory

Dr. Geralyn Timler is the director of the Child Language Laboratory in our department. She is currently investigating clinical markers for Language Impairment (LI) in young children with and without behavior problems. The goal of this research is to identify assessment protocols for differentiating language and attention problems. This research is funded by a 2006 New Century Scholars research grant from the American Speech-Language Hearing Foundation.

Dr. Timler's previous research has included examining social communication, more specifically the social knowledge of school-age children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and LI.

Dr. Timler spoke of her transition from being a seasoned clinician to becoming a clinical researcher. Her interest in research stemmed from parents asking about research that supported use of specific therapeutic techniques.

Dawn Vogler-Elias, a Ph.D. student working with Dr. Timler, is currently completing a meta-analysis that investigates treatment efficacy for young children with Autism. She will be presenting her findings at the Biennial Conference for the Society of Research for Child Development, which is being held in Boston from March 29-April 1, 2007. Dr. Timler will also present her results from a study investigating social knowledge in children with language impairment.
